    Salema in the Algarve

Salema a quite resort on the Algarve coast in Portugal

Salema is a beach village and an isolated town in western Algarve, Portugal. Although it lacks the amenities that other more famous destinations have, it is one of the most popular destinations. This is because there are many people who are always looking for opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of bigger towns. Historically, Salema town has been a very small fishing town between sagres and Lagos. Rua de Pescadores is the main road in the town. The town is home to many fishermen who daily moor their ship and cast their fishing nets. The nearby resorts as well as apartments have been renovated and updated and this has somewhat threatened the small-town feel it has been enjoying overtime. However, it remains to be a laid-back town where many take respite from the cacophony of larger towns in Algarve.

Railway lines end at Lagos in Algarve, so Salema does not have any railway network. The peaceful town is however accessible by car although parking may present a major challenge during busy months. For a handful of Euros, one can also easily get a bus from Lagos and head to Salema. Determined backpackers may also decide to hike all the way from Lagos to Salema, enjoying the incomparable thrill. One can decide to make use of a combination of beach trails and the available roads.
Since Salema is a small town, one can easily access the beach from wherever they are. There are well-connected and efficacious internet cafes for those that cannot do without the internet as well as a retinue of classic restaurants where visitors can enjoy their meals. The only exception to such proximity may only apply to the golf course as well as the large resort, both situated in the northern part of the town. It is however doable for those are not easily tired by strolling. It is about 4km.

Salema’s beaches are one of the most authentic and most attractive on the Portuguese coast. Its coast is more than a kilometer long, with some parts being a bit rocky and others filled with sand. Fishing boats line the shores of the beach, but this adds rather detracts the beauty of the beach. For those that love hiking, opportunities for this are abundant in Salema. Biking opportunities in this small town are also plenty. There are roads that provide perfect opportunities for this.

Despite the many renovations and updatings that have been done in Salema, the fact is that it has not been able to attract huge populations of tourists. Many golf enthusiasts do not tour the small town as one might expect. They instead go to the Parque da Florest which is several miles north of the town. There are however a big number of people (both locals and tourists) who grace the local bars, restaurants, and museums.
