In the Algarve, Tavira is an architecturally beautiful town which found its origin in or about 2,000 BC.For the duration of the Roman period, its location was of substantial significance and covered a wide area of around 45 hectares to the eastern part of current situation of Tavira. The town was famous for its fishing industry when the Moors carried out their profession at the Algarve. However, it was taken by Dom Paio Peres Correia in the year 1242 after the murder of his seven chief Knights during a supposed treaty. The port started shipping some products like dried fish, wine and salt in the 17th Century. In 1755, all principal structures along with its castle were demolished like many other towns of the Algarve by an earthquake.
Santa Luzia is located 2km to the western part of the city. Now-a-days, it is also called “Capital doPolvo”. It is often known as “Octopus Capital” due to its local specialty of introducing lots of methods to prepare and cook octopus. The calm place is situated at Tavira’s edge in the midst of soothing landscape and in a pleasant background. The Island of Tavira is a nature reserve located nearby. It is abode of a number of animals like chameleons and hares along with various species of birds. It contributes to make Santa Luzia a natural bliss. The place enjoys a pleasing weather throughout the year.


The fabulous town boasts of several wonderful attractions which lure tourists to pay a visit to this part of the world. Perhaps the best place to visit is St Luzia’s beach. It is locally famous as Terra Estreita, which means ‘narrow land’. The beach is named so because of its position at the Ihla de Tavira’s point. It is a less crowded coastline and offers tranquil and peaceful background, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. You can enjoy a great boat ride here. A typical excursion on Santa Luzia tour is to Tavira, a nearby city. One of the most interesting and largest places of the region, it includes several beautiful attractions. Moreover, you can enjoy live music, Fado on Saturday. There is a good selection of handicraft, “Artesanato” as well.
