Tavira´s origins date back to the Bronze Age about three thousand years ago. During the eight century it became a Phoenician colonial urban center, featuring massive walls, temples and two harbor. Back on those days the name of the city was; “Baal Saphon” named after the Phoenician thunder and sea god. It is also interesting to know that the city was abandoned for almost a century until a new settlement took over it during the Tartessian period and it became bigger than ever. Tavira was also part of the Roman empire and has since been rebuilt with completely fine eight century buildings and hosting more than thirty five churches around the city.
