Vila do Bispo is an exotic tourist destination that lies in the western Algarve in Portugal….

It is a small town that is situated 22 kms away from the west of Lagos. This municipality includes towns like Budens, Sagres and Raposeira. At Vila do Bispo, tourists will find archetypal Algarvean houses that are mainly located around the sixteenth century church. During the 14th century, this region was known as Aldeia do Bispo


One of the major attractions in Vila do Bispo is the Tanegashima Square. Though built in the modern times (1992), this Square is of historical significance as it was erected after signing an accord with Nishinoomote in Japan to commemorate the fact that the Portugese were the first among the Europeans to set foot in Japan. Tanegashima Square or Praça de Tanegashima was inaugurated in the year 1998.
Tourists planning to go surfing would find the Praia do Castelejo an ideal place. This is situated in the West Atlantic Coast. While in the Sagres town, tourists can also bask in the beaches located there, as it is just eight kilometers away. For those looking for some privacy, the beaches between Burgau and Sagres would be ideal. At the Ingrina and Zavial Beach, there is a beach bar-cum-restaurant.
Tourists must visit the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe that is just a few kilometers away from the eastern Raposeira. This Chapel is famous as Prince Henry is reported to have worshipped there. Interestingly, it is one of the very few buildings that survived a major earthquake in the year 1755. It is important to note that this Chapel will be closed on Mondays and holidays.
Surrounded by beaches, there are a lot many sea-based activities such as diving, go-karting, boat and fishing trips, that will have the tourists entertained. You could also catch a glimpse of the marine life, swim with the friendly dolphins, and go for a boat ride when in Vila do Bispo.
Want to relax playing a game of golf? Do check out the two popular golf courses – Parque da Floresta and Boa Vista. For both children as well as adults, the Slide and Splash Water Park, located close to Lagos will be an ideal place for fun and frolic. The Lagos Zoo is yet another tourist attraction and kids are sure to enjoy it here.


Some of the major events at Vila do Bispo are the yearly carnival and fair in Raposeira, which is scheduled during the second week of September, the annual carnival in Vila do Bispo during the third week of September, the Sagres Festival (August 13 – 15th) celebrated in honor of St. saint Nossa Senhora da Graça, the Festa do Banho 29 on the 29th of August in Sagres, the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, Raposeira on the 24th of March, the Burgau Festival from 20th to 22nd August and the Barão de S. Miguel festivals on August 7, 8, 21 and 22.

Night Life  

Being a small town there is not a great deal of night life in Vila do Bispo but there are plenty of bars and cafe´s some open round the clock. There are wide choices of liquor for the tourists and interestingly they are not priced too high.


Tourists will be surprised by the number of restaurants that this town houses. There are a variety of choices to satisfy your taste buds! With the town surrounded by seas, fish is a prominent food that you will find on the menu of almost all restaurants in this region. When in Vila do Bispo, tourists must try out the local delicacy Perceves, which is also known as goose barnacles. The hunting season in this area is between October and December and during this time tourists can find menu containing dishes made of wild boar, partridge, hare, and quails.
