Vilamoura on the Algarve coast in Portugal


Vilamoura is the name of an area rather than the name of a town. It is located in the Algarve on the Portuguese south coast in the Quarteira vicinity. It is on of the largest tourist complexes in Europe and is home to a marina, several golf academies, more than 6 golf courses, including Laguna golf course, Millennium golf course, The Old Course, Pinhal golf course, Victoria golf course, and Vila Sol golf course, a gambling casino, Night clubs, a tennis club, a diving club, several beaches including Falesia Beach. Accomodation is abundant and many 3 to 5 star hotels and numerous other leisure facilities.

It is located some 14 miles west along the coast from the Algarve capital Faro and is some 266 kilometers from the Portuguese capital Lisbon. Visitors will find flights are often and reasonable to the Algarve’s main airport which is 10 miles from Vilamoura at Faro Airport. From there they can use taxi services or coach facilities to reach Vilamoura.

Its history dates back to 1974 when it was built by a wealthy banker known as Cupertino de Miranda. The Vilamoura Marina is the heart of the activities in this area. Here we find the restaurants, bars and shops. It is a peaceful place during the day although busy and gets livelier at night when most people gather to eat and drink. Accommodation is available throughout the area with options of hotel and private villas which are excellent but not too expensive.


Vilamoura boast of a 1000 berth marina. Its visitors are from all walks of life. Its main attractions include the following,
The roman ruins and museum of cero de villain the middle of Vilamoura which have been dated as early as the 1st century AD. They offer visitors insight into the lives of the ancient Algarve inhabitants, the silos from the Islamic period, the foundation of a funeral tower and the docks from the roman period. The nearby Vilamoura crazy golf course offers some fun for families, whilst the Aquashow water park is just a ten minute drive away. Further afield attractions include Zoomarine, Krazy World, Almancil Karting, and Lagos Zoo.

The Vilamoura has 2 beaches where visitors can enjoy the sun after a swim.
There are a total of 6 golf courses in Vilamoura which are world renown where visitors can play golf.


Big game deep sea fishing is a favorite activity to many visitors in this area. Many of the kiosks at the far end of Vilamoura Marina offer day trips for both game fishing and cruises alike. Visitors can also take boat rides to local caves along the coast line. as well as a dolphin watch trip. There is a riding canter where riding lessons can betaken by visitors to enable them enjoy jet skiing and parascending. Also in abundace are the golfing facilities as well as a tennis center.


There are many events held in the Vilamoura area including Show jumping, golf tournaments, car rallies, vintage car shows, live music on the Vilamoura marina and many sports events including sailing, triathlon and running. Vilamoura is one of the few tourist destinations that offer quality and memorable experiences to its visitors. The efforts taken for its development have made it take up an image for the development of tourism in the next millennium. Many who have returned from this paradise often wish to return to enjoy the perfect settings that a day spent there turns into a vibrant evening full of vitality.

Night Life  

The night life is centered around the Vilamoura Marina where there is a mood to suit every taste from champagne bar to karaoke bars. Transport between resorts is available through trains on wheels. These run after every 30 minutes and offer visitors the chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery that the Vilamoura has to offer them.


Most of the restaurants are situated in the Marina area where they offer delicious Portuguese and international cuisine. The night life is vibrant with many bars and casinos which surround the Marina. The Vilamoura casino is a popular place for many because of its regular evening entertainment which includes shows and dances, as well as gaming rooms.
